A unique series

For the first time, Michelin presents the first two volumes of its series called « The Tyre ». This series, developed in close collaboration with the experts working in the Technological Centres, puts into form Michelin's  tyre expertise. It is mainly aimed at constructors, road professionals, academics and the press. These key players are the most likely to contribute to public awareness of the importance of tyres for safety, for the conservation of the environment and for the economy.

This work will also further Michelin's ambition to become the reference with respect to technical communications in the field of tyres. Each volume deals with one or two  performances of a tyre. Volumes 1 and 2, respectively, discuss grip and mechanical and acoustic comfort. They convey the efforts in Research and Development carried out by Michelin in the field of safety and for a better respect of the environment.

The topic of the next volume, which should be published in early 2003,  will be rolling resistance and its consequences on fuel consumption and on emissions of pollutants. This  theme represents a major challenge for tyre manufacturers who have to respond to growing demands  with regard to the environment.

A wealth of information that can be used by the great majority of people

Information is set up in a way that allows either a cover to cover reading or the possibility to read each chapter independently of the others. It is therefore possible at any time to go from one chapter to the other without losing the general understanding of the topic discussed. Each volume is presented in the same way. Several levels of reading allow to meet the various expectations of the users –from the most general queries to the highly technical. The  text, within the reach of everyone and illustrated  by many diagrams and pictures, is completed by columns called  « A little more information on... ». These columns, relying on physics demonstrations, are more specifically geared toward a population who requires more technical information.

Inserts that bring together cross-disciplinary information add to the topic. Finally, a column called "Don't forget the basics" summarises the various points discussed in the chapter. To make this series even more attractive and practical for the users,  Michelin has compiled all the information contained in each volume onto a CD Rom, along with all the graphs and pictures illustrating the theme. A unique wealth of information, put together by experts, is now available for those who have a special interest in tyres. This series aims at providing a better understanding of the high technology of tyres and their essential role in terms of safety for the user.
